One of our members, luis, got me wondering:
1. What's your favorite part of HM3?
2. What part of HM3 do you most dislike (or hate)?
Thanks, HMdesigner

My favorite part was the fine adjudtments allowed before the release of the game, like test screenings, choosing the release date, the type of release. The area I think could be improved is the Direct to Video section, alowing the production to be focused on cheaper STV movie making.

Favourite part - The depth of the process including people expressing interests in certain roles etc. Expansion - It's not so much a dislike...more an expansion. Certain roles (James Bond) are typically white male etc, it would be cool if talents had ethnicity etc allocated to them so they could be suited to certain roles or conversely, have an actor come way out of their range to do something different. Casting a role such as Bond to a Black female could generate controversy where if it is performed well then the movie gets more buzz, done badly and it could be hammered by critics. Dislike - Lack of character within the talents - no relationships / long standing collaborations etc. (Nolan/Tom Hardy/Murphy) (Gosling/Stone)

1. I love the depth of the game. From the casting to the test screenings and box office earnings and more. It is super well-crafted and has layers to it that other games just simply don't have.
2. This is sort of just a gripe, but I feel like the critic system could use some work as I stated in a post before. I love the awards aspect, but I just always felt like it was missing something.

This is complicated by a number of things. 1) The game is played in many countries, and ethnicity is not the same in the US as it is in England, or South Korea, or Brazil (all countries where HM3 is played). So how do I quantify what is ethnic? 2) In your particular example, how would the game KNOW that James Bond is traditionally a white male? But it is the first part of the answer that is the most difficult. A number of people have asked me how they can make 'The Martin Luther King, Jr Story' in HM4. And I don't have an answer that doesn't offend or upset someone somewhere in some corner of the globe. HMdesigner

You know ... there's a BUG in HM3 ... not a bug really, just something I forgot to address ... if you give a talent FINAL CUT on a movie YOU can still make edits after a test screening.
Not in HM4. Because YOU don't have final cut.

1. As someone who played from the first Hollywood Mogul game until the latest release, I can truly appreciate the smart ways that HM3 was made deeper, but not so much that it was a "death by Excel spreadsheet" kind of gameplay. Simple things, like actor schedule conflicts, make the strategy extend outside the confines of the window. I make decisions to sit on projects because I know it will tie up filmmakers/actors for an extended period of time, and as other projects wrap up, my approach to that original project has to change for a multitude of reasons (like, for example, the unexpected success of another property and the pressure to sequel-ize it immediately). That's such a nuanced and small element of HM3 that gives it striking depth. 2. Honestly, I regard HM as one of the best games ever made...period. But if there was an area I would have loved "improvement" in, it would be in the critical assessment of projects and that extending into award season in a more consistent way. I would have loved for award season to be a more prolonged affair where it becomes a project in of itself - coming up with a list of the strongest candidates and doing a FYC campaign, perhaps seeing how those campaigns resonate in end-of-year critics lists or the Golden Globes, and then your work culminating in the nominations. To be fair, I love how it is now and that's just a dream of mine.

Likes: How in-depth when it comes to developing the movie. Test Screenings, choosing the Run-Time, choosing how much Violence, Language, and Love Scenes are featured in a movie. Etc
Dislikes: My biggest dislike is the Sequel system in the game. I do a Spider-Man or a Batman film, I go to do a sequel which means to introduce new characters, new villains, kill off certain characters from the first movie, toggle with the ratings etc to make the sequel bigger/better than the first and it takes 28 Months to complete the script because it has to be rewritten (not sure why it has to be rewritten when it’s a new movie/sequel from scratch). Which means that the sequel won’t come out for another 5 Years when normally sequels to those movies come out 2-3 Years later. We should also be able to shoot movies back to back.

Like : The detailing of departments, the idea of selling distribution rights globally or domestically. Deciding the marketing campaign and what should be the main focus in the teaser/trailer, Love the part where we can edit the font, background and have things customized for the final print.
Dislike : When we choose to shoot the film on 105mm, we are restricted to release the film domestically only on 2000 screens, there should be an option where we can release the film in different formats as well. When it comes to clashes, two films releasing on Easter, even if the other studio is planning a release on 7k screens and mine on 7200, theres no difference in the box office output.

I agree with most of this. In HM4 it takes less than a month to rewrite a screenplay, and 1 to 3 months to write a first draft. So I hope that the new system will alleviate your issues with sequels.
Now ... back to back shooting. I hate it. It's a nightmare of scheduling and hiring issues. I'll think about adding it, but I hate it.
