What about the ability to create movie franchises with shared cinematic universes like the MCU and DCEU? Like you, as a studio, could sign an actor like Robert Downey, Jr. to a 10-picture deal and be able to use him not only in stand alone Iron Man movies, but have him appear as Iron Man in another franchise like Captain America or The Avengers and see how it effects the box-office? The Avengers is interesting because it was a merging of several franchises that had been building up for a few years, so it was an even bigger blockbuster than any of the stand alone films as a result. Just a thought.
HMSdesigner: This is a good idea. I'm not sure about how to implement it, but I do recognize that it maybe become "the norm" in some types of tent-pole movie production.

Would it be possible to make it so that certain talent would never agree to certain types of projects? For example Daniel Day Lewis would probably never sign on to a superhero franchise and Michael Bay would probably never direct a talking animal movie for kids. Could this be implemented during creation of databases? Like when you're saying that an actor is five stars in drama you could also check that they prefer prestige pictures and refuse low budget horror or something. Also could those change over time? Like Liam Neeson reinventing himself as an action hero or a situation where someone's star power greatly diminishes so they agree to do schlocky films?
HMSdesigner: To some degree, this is already in the game, although with a cap of 600 records you probably didn't notice. It can be expanded in a new version of the game.
Could there be a way to campaign for awards? Once a film is finished or released you begin an awards campaign focusing on the film as a whole or a specific area (such as a supporting actress that gave a great performance)? Obviously it would cost money (running ads, holding press events, etc.) but there would be benefits. If you win an award for a film or a performer they could be more likely to work for you in the future on projects they wouldn't otherwise be interested in or perhaps and maybe they'd take a pay cut on your projects. You could also get a reputation as a studio that picks up awards which makes certain talents want to work with you more. Also in awards I often would see someone nominated multiple times in the same category. That is against the rules for actors at the Oscars (but not directors) so is there a way to stop that?
HMSdesigner: This seems like very specific functionality. I'm not sure it would "game" very well. But I will look at it.
Could there be a film festival or two like Sundance, Cannes, or Toronto? Essentially when the festival happens X number of independent films are generated by the game (let's say 25) and you see the reviews, audience reactions, and buzz for each film. You can then enter into bidding wars with the other studios for these films. The films at the festivals would be generated using talent that wasn't getting work from the studios and they could be launched to stardom or have a career comeback from these films. Any films not bought at the festivals by the studios could still be released independently and have a very small chance of doing well at the box office or winning awards but good reviews from those films could still make someone a sought after actor or director.
HMSdesigner: I agree this would be interesting. But that's 25 more titles that will get eaten up each year. THAT's the issue. I suppose we could have a separate "Film Festival Film" database ... that YOU could create. LOL.
Every so often could we be alerted to "hot" source material that is available to buy? This could be a novel, comic book, remake, etc. and you would have to bid against other studios and the price could get ridiculous but you'll have a much higher chance of it being a blockbuster when you make it. Though with that popular of source material fan expectations are much higher so you have to make it right.
HMSdesigner: I agree with this completely. And like the above, this would come from a separate database. Christ, who's going to create all these databases? Oh, right. You guys are. Whew. Thank God.

I think for the shared universes it would be cool if you could create characters and then save them with the actors. So you can use those characters in sequels and other movies for cameos, or make prequels that are related to it.
Also it would be cool to add more functions regarding the wide context of the films you produce, for example receive offers of people offering you to make videogames and things like that.
HMSdesigner This post, and the next post, are very interesting. Thanks.

yeah i agree with pitumola, maybe there should be a character database. for example
Character BATMAN type, gender et cetera character popularity
FILMOGRAPHY Batman - Keaton Batman Returns - Keaton The Dark Knight - Bale Batman V Superman - Affleck
of course character type and age can be modified, but extreme modification can hurt character (or with interesting director could revive the character)
reference: Total Extreme Wrestling
HMSdesigner This idea, and the post above it, are very interesting. Thank you.
another suggestion
START IN THE EARLY 20 CENTURY so the game can begin in the early 20 century, with the early talent and then new talent debuting with correlation with history. reference: Movie Business 2 by Tomiga
HMSdesigner: You can already set the start year in the current game. Allowing the talent to "enter" the game at a pre-determined time has already been discussed (somewhere, at some time, by someone. Not that it's your fault for not knowing, I'm not even sure if it was on THIS board.) So, yes.
TREND can be turned on or turned off. Every year there will be a trend in a movie like current obsession with superhero movie or former trend with western movie. reference: Mad Games Tycoon
HMSdesigner: Yeah, I like the sound of this.
SCREENWRITER i always able to beat the game because of the screenwriter system in the game, it is so easy to create a 5 star script (and 5 star script have a bigger chance at box office) but somehow i never found out how to create an interesting story appeal (so random). So make screenwriter as one of the talent, and also it is interesting to see a writers room which is very popular nowadays (e.g. Akiva Goldsman's Transformer Writing Team) and have the member to pitch potential script for the franchise.
HMSdesigner: Well ... now we're in it. HM2.5 had a more robust writer sysem, but took forever .... or so that was the complaints I got so I came up with the current writer system. Thankfully the current system is being complained about ... so I can go back to how I originally had it. Woo hoo.
PRODUCER & AGENT WITH MORE PROMINENT ROLE i always feel that the producer and agent is always a bit redundant in the game. Producer system should be overhauled to be more like a production company because it is funny for me to hire someone like Harvey Weinstein lol. And also for agent i would love to reference the system in Football Manager in the negotiation system and also how some of the talent capabilities could be hidden (can be turned on/off) and we can gain more insight by being close with the agencies.
HMSdesigner: Umm... I am open to a change in the Agent system. The Producer role will maybe come to the fore in the all new Production Problems functionality.
MORE VARIETY IN MOVIE SUCCESS i already mentioned it previously, but to beat the game i always feel like to create a 5 star script to create a better movie. But i hope in the next installment i can achieve success by a 3 star script horror because maybe preference from audience or et cetera.
HMSdesigner: Okay, 5-star scripts will no longer do well. That was easy. LOL. Okay. I'll look at it. Happy New Year to you ... in jail.
Thank you and Happy New Year HMDesigner
(I hope you got the reference and don't think I'm wishing you ill.)

I just came with an idea to add a voice actor database.
And when you buy an animated source like The Simpsons or SpongeBob you also get the voice actors from the source already casted in their roles.
HMSdesigner: No. You can't have the actors attached to the database. That's ALL I'll hear about for animated projects. But I'll try to work out some kind of "relationship." I get where you're going. I think.

Also, I'd love to be able to set future talent to debut at specific months and years. That way you could start your studio in the 1970s, during the rise of New Hollywood and the birth of the blockbuster, and run it through the modern age with fresh talent debuting when they normally debut. HMSdesigner: Umm ... I don't know about this. This requires too many different systems for revenue success. Before Jaws was released summer was a "dead zone" for studios. Also, before Jaws, movies were released region by region. I remember reading an interview with Warren Beatty ... a movie he was in was released in March or April, and it was Christmas and he was still on the road promoting it in Pittsburgh or somewhere where it had JUST opened. It's a nightmare of systems. That's completely understandable, but I was mostly referring to be able to just set up a long-term game with new user-created talent debuting at specific times.

I think it would be a good idea to have the ability to add more active studios in the game. Maybe up to around 20. 10 big and 10 small.
And have the AI make more smaller and straight to video releases.
This should get most of the talent at least 1 acting job a year.

Okay ... here is something for all of you to think about ... and I mean it. Think about this. I took a boat-load of heat from reviewers over the years because the game was NOT very graphical. I could NEVER figure out HOW to make it graphical because so much information has to be communicated from me to you. I remember getting a "score" of 55 or 59 or something out of 100. The review said the game was FUN, and DEEP but looked bad. The very next review was a game the reviewer said was stupid, not fun, but looked great graphically, so it was given a score of 95. This was for the original DOS version in 1995 (LOL TWENTY-ONE YEARS AGO oh my God) So when I brought it to Windows(R) I tried to have images in the background, and write all the text out with shadows, etc. And that takes time. And work. And planning. A boat-load of planning. So ... the game development could be shortened considerably if I went with more traditional Windows(R)-style menus. Drop down lists, etc. So here's what I want you to think about: How would you feel if the game looked more like a business app than a computer game but was developed faster? The thing is ... if I did it with more traditional Windows(R)-type controls ... I could really go crazy and add EVERYTHING to the game that I had originally planned all those years ago ... Hollywood Movie Studio TV Production Studio TV Networks and Cable Channels Music Company Publishing Company Theme Parks Animation Studios Special Effect Houses Video Game Production All in one game. Everything, all the data, would be in text files you could edit ... and you could just add stuff you wanted. For example, you could easily add new movie genres, or new shoot locations, or create your own Production Problems ... I've always wanted to just go crazy with HM. This way I could. And so could you. Eventually. Anyway, HAPPY NEW YEAR you HMS-playing movie-makers. I hope 2017 brings you happiness. And, of course ... good luck at the box office!
HMSdesigner
Adding art would make the game prettier but HM4 will never win awards for how it looks. It will be all about gameplay and if you have a way to make it more immersive on that front by going with a business app type thing I'm all for it. The side effect that it will be completed quicker is just a bonus. Just as long as it plays on a PC. This is the post I meant to quote.

I would love to be able to produce an original movie and its sequels at the same time, just like Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Or at least write the script for the sequels. It takes too long to release a movie, then write the script for its sequel, produce the sequel and then release it... sometimes it's 4-5 year difference from the original movie to the first sequel.
I'm happy that you're doing a new game, I'm really excited! Keep up the good work!!
